Complex Trauma
Complex trauma builds over years, often in childhood, through relationships that were supposed to be safe and weren't consistently.
This is different from a single traumatic event. Complex trauma comes from repeated experiences, often in a family, that shaped how you learned to survive.
How It Can Show Up in Adulthood
-
01
A high tolerance for dysfunction and a low tolerance for rest
-
02
Difficulty trusting your own perception, especially in relationships
-
03
A pattern of overfunctioning: at work, at home, in friendships
-
04
A vague, persistent sense that something is wrong, without a single event to point to
Survival skills don't always retire on their own.
How I Work
Internal Family Systems is well suited to complex trauma because it treats your coping strategies, even the exhausting ones, as parts that developed for good reason. Brainspotting and somatic work help process what talking alone can't reach. We go at a pace that respects how long these patterns took to form.
Who I See
Patients who function well by outside measures and still feel, underneath, like they're managing an old injury that never fully closed.
