Birth Trauma Therapy for Arlington

Arlington is full of women having a first baby a long way from anyone who has ever changed a nappy for them. That distance is not a detail. It changes what a hard birth does to you afterwards.

A First Baby with Nobody in the Building

You moved here for a job, or your partner did. The people you know are people you met through work or through the building or through a running group. They are good people and they will bring you a meal. They are not your mother, and they are not the aunt who would have simply arrived and taken the baby for four hours without being asked.

When the birth was straightforward, that gap is hard. When the birth was frightening, the gap becomes the whole problem. There is nobody in the room who was there, nobody who saw your face when the tone in the room changed, nobody who can say out loud what actually happened so that you know you did not exaggerate it. You are left holding the only copy of the story, and a story with only one witness starts to feel unreliable even to the person who lived it.

Then you are on the phone to family who are four states away or a flight away, and the version you give them is the short one, because they are worried and you do not want to frighten them, and because they will ask questions you do not have the composure to answer yet. So the short version becomes the official version. Healthy baby. Long labor. All fine now.

What It Looks Like from the Outside

First-time mothers in Arlington tend to be extremely competent about the parts of this that can be researched. The car seat is correct. The pediatrician was chosen carefully. The spreadsheet exists. What is not on the spreadsheet is that you have not slept properly since you came home, not because of the baby, but because your body will not stand down.

I hear a particular sentence a lot from this part of the county. Some version of: everyone keeps telling me how well I am doing. It is said flatly, because the compliment has become evidence that nobody can see you.

The Isolation Part Is Treatable, and It Is Not Just Loneliness

It is tempting to file all of this under new-mother loneliness and try to solve it with a class or a group. Those are worth having. They do not touch a traumatic birth, because a traumatic birth is not stored as a social problem. It is stored in the nervous system, in the parts of you that are still braced.

The work I do goes at that directly. Brainspotting lets us find where the event is actually held rather than talking around it. Internal Family Systems gives you a way to be in the same room as the part of you that is still terrified without being flooded by it. Somatic work gives your body somewhere to put what it has been carrying since that night.

None of that requires you to produce a tidy account of what happened. Most women cannot, at first, and being unable to is not a sign that you are not ready.

Practical

I see Arlington patients by secure video, so a session costs you the session and nothing else. Early morning and evening slots exist because this is when a partner is home or the baby is down. I am licensed in Virginia only, which means you need to be physically in Virginia when we meet, including if your office sits on the other side of the river.

Where to Start If You Recognize Yourself Here

Start with the free consultation call. It is short, it is not an assessment, and you do not have to have a tidy explanation ready. Most women open with some version of: I think the birth is still affecting me and I do not know why it is still affecting me.

If it turns out that what you need is something other than what I do, I will say so on that call rather than book you in. That is part of what the call is for.
