# Birth Trauma Therapy for Vienna

Vienna is where people settle in to have the rest of their children. A lot of the women I see here are not recovering from a first birth. They are deciding whether they can face another one.

## The Second Baby Question

It usually arrives quietly. Your first is two, or three. Friends are pregnant again. Your partner mentions it lightly, the way you mention something you assume is agreed. And you notice that your whole body says no before you have formed an opinion.

That is not indecision and it is not a preference. That is a nervous system that has already been through something and is voting. The difficulty is that it does not come with an explanation attached, so you are left arguing with yourself about whether you are being irrational, selfish, or difficult, when in fact you are being protected by a part of you that took the last birth extremely seriously.

## What Tokophobia Actually Looks Like Day to Day

Rarely dramatic. It looks like changing the subject. It looks like a reason why now is not the right year, produced fluently, three years running. It looks like reading a friend's birth story and having to put your phone down. It looks like a wave of dread at the sight of the hospital exit sign on the drive to somewhere else entirely.

It also looks like grief, because most women in this position did want more children, and the fear is standing between them and a family they had pictured. That is a loss happening in real time, and it is usually carried in silence because it sounds ungrateful to say out loud.

## It Also Shows Up As Parenting the First One

Something else happens in families like this. The child who was born in the frightening birth is not a neutral figure. Some mothers find they are more anxious with that child specifically, or that a birthday brings something they cannot name, or that certain sounds and smells from that day arrive uninvited while doing something completely ordinary at home.

None of that means you love the child less. It means the event and the child got stored together, and they can be separated.

## Working on It Before You Decide

The point of this work is not to talk you into another pregnancy. It is to get the previous birth out of the driver's seat so that whatever you decide is actually your decision rather than a reflex. Some women go on to conceive. Some conclude they are done and find they can hold that with peace instead of guilt. Both are legitimate endings and I do not steer.

Practically, we use Brainspotting and somatic work to reduce the physical charge on the memory, and Internal Family Systems to hear from the part that is refusing, rather than overriding it. If you are already pregnant again, the work changes shape and becomes about preparing for a birth in a body that remembers the last one.

Sessions are by secure video across Virginia. I am licensed in Virginia only, so you need to be in the state when we meet.

## If Your Partner Is Asking and You Cannot Explain

This is one of the most common private strains in the households I work with here. He wants another child, or he assumes another child is coming, and you cannot produce a reason that sounds proportionate. So the conversation gets postponed, then it gets tense, then it stops happening at all and sits underneath everything else.

It helps enormously when the fear has a name and a shape. Not so that he can talk you out of it, but so that the two of you are discussing an actual thing rather than a mood you cannot account for.

## How to Begin

A free consultation call. You do not need to have decided anything about another baby before you make it, and deciding is not the price of admission.
