Harlan Therapy · Virginia

# The birth ended. The fear didn’t.

Therapy for birth trauma and the years after, for the mother everyone assumes is fine.

Everyone keeps telling you the baby is healthy, so you say you are grateful, and you are. You are also still replaying the moment the room changed, flinching at the smell of the hospital, and doing the math on whether you could survive doing it again. You can be grateful and still be carrying something that needs a witness. That is the work I do.

Is This You?

## If any of these land, you are in the right place.

- 01

    ### You are still in that room

The birth is over on paper. You are still replaying the moment the tone in the room changed, and everyone around you has moved on to the baby.

- 02

    ### You are grateful and you are not okay

You have heard at least the baby is healthy so many times that you have stopped saying anything at all. Both things are true at once.

- 03

    ### You look completely capable

You answer the emails, you remember the appointments, and you sit in the parked car for four minutes before you can walk inside.

- 04

    ### The thought of doing it again frightens you

You want another baby, or you are already pregnant, and there is a fear underneath it you cannot say out loud to anyone who loves you.

- 05

    ### Mothering brought up your own mother

Things you were sure you had handled a decade ago are back, and they arrive at bedtime, in your own voice.

- 06

    ### You are not a mother and this still fits

Something happened to your body or your sense of safety, and you have been competent about it ever since. That counts here too.

Why This Practice Exists

## Because too many women are told to be grateful and sent home.

A birth can go medically well and still change a woman in ways nobody charted. Nothing is written down, nothing is followed up, and the questions afterwards are all about the baby. So you say you are fine, because the alternative is explaining something you have never had the room to put into words.

I built this practice around the time that takes. Fewer patients, longer sessions, and no rushing you toward the version of the story that is easiest to tell. The aim is for you to stop living in survival mode, to bring the whole account, including the part you have never said out loud, and not have it hurried past or handed back to you tidied up.

How I Work

## Targeted, Body Based Work, Entirely on Your Terms

Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems, and somatic work, aimed at the specific thing that has not moved, in weekly sessions, or concentrated into a private four hour intensive. You will not be handed a worksheet, and you will not be asked to relive everything in detail to be taken seriously.

[More on the approach ](/approach)

1. Step 01

    ### A Free Consultation

Fifteen minutes by phone. You tell me what happened and what it has been doing to you since, and I tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it.

2. Step 02

    ### The First Few Sessions

We build the ground before we go anywhere near the hardest part. You set what gets touched and when, and nothing is pried out of you to keep to a schedule.

3. Step 03

    ### Weekly, and Then We Look Again

Sessions run weekly to start, because that is what makes the work hold between them. Once things settle, we look together at what the cadence should be. For a defined piece of work, a therapy intensive can replace months of weekly sessions with one focused window.

What I Believe

A birth can go medically well and still leave a woman changed in ways nobody charted.

You do not need a diagnosis to deserve _to be taken seriously_. You need someone who can hear the whole account, including the part you have never said out loud, without flinching and without telling you to focus on the positive. Getting better here is not measured by productivity or perfection. It is measured by your ability to experience peace, connection, and joy.
